How to control reed canary grass
Reed canary grass can take over wetland areas quickly. This is what we have used to control it.
These methods may also control phragmites although we have fortunately not had to deal with that species.
Aquatic Glyphosate
- Aquatic glyphosate is formulated to be used in and around water. It is reportedly safe for fish, aquatic animals, and amphibians.
- We mix up two (2) ounces of glyphosate in one (1) gallon ofwater. We add one (1) teaspoon of aquatic surfactant and shake it up well.
- We use a backpack sprayer but a one (1) or two (2) gallongarden sprayer would also work. We use a sprayer head with a wide spray pattern.
- Reed canary grass grows early in the growing season before most other things. Spray the reed canary grass when it is at least six (6) inches or so above the water. It will not work for plants under water.
- Glyphosate kills all vegetation. If you see other plantsgrowing be aware they will be killed too.
Clethodim
- Clethodim is an herbicide that kills grasses without affecting other plants, sedges, and rushes. Use this only when the ground is dry. It is not formulated to be sprayed over water.
- We mix up 1/2 to 2/3 ounce of clethodim (that’s all you need) in one (1) gallon of water. Add a teaspoon of surfactant and shake it up well. We use a backpack sprayer but a one (1) or two (2) gallon garden sprayer would also work. Use a sprayer head with a wide spray pattern.
- Spray the reed canary grass during the growing season.
- Clethodim doesn’t work as quickly as glyphosate. It may take three (3) weeks or more before you see the reed canary grass turning to a lighter green or brown. It seems to stunt the growth of the plant initially.
Safety
- Be sure to follow all safety recommendations and applicable laws or regulations when using.
- Avoid contact with your body.
